Obituary Saturo Nagata

Saturo Nagata, medical director of NAGATA Microtia and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Clinic, passed away from sudden cardiac death on January 2, 2022 at the age of 71 years. He was one of the founders of modern microtia reconstruction and the two stage Nagata method is used worldwide as the state of art technique in ear reconstruction.

Nagata was born on August 28, 1950 in Nagasaki, Japan, where he spent his childhood and got inspired to become a plastic surgeon by learning about Atomic Bomb Maidens, women who suffered severe burns from the atomic bomb.

Nagata graduated from Tottori University Faculty of Medicine in 1978. He completed and received his PhD at Kyorin University Graduate School of Medicine in 2000. He established the NAGATA Microtia and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Clinic in Toda City, Saitama, Japan in 2005, where he treated more than 2000 patients with microtia. He was a teacher for many and besides being an artist in ear reconstruction, he loved music and excelled in drawing and painting. The private funeral service took place in Nagasaki where his ashes were placed in his family’s grave.

With the death of dr.Saturo Nagata, the International Society for Auricular Reconstruction (ISAR), lost one of its most important figureheads.
