Hans Anderl
September 7, 1930 – October 23, 2023

Hans Anderl, Emeritus Professor of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University Innsbruck, Austria, from 1986 to 1998, passed away on October 23rd, 2023 at the age of 93 years.

His passion and creativity in the field of plastic surgery brought him fame in his country and internationally. He was known for his dedication to his patients, his employees and his fascinating surgical skills. He contributed to the development of craniofacial surgery, microsurgery and especially peripheral nerve surgery where he introduced cross facial nerve grafting. In cleft lip and palate surgery he was a strong advocate of primary reconstruction of the nose.

In 1973, he was one of the enthusiastic European plastic surgeons who started the Alpine Workshop (AWS), an informal annual gathering in the mountains, which established solid scientific ties and friendship between those participating. Out of the AWS, Hans was, together with Daniel Marchac, Wolfgang Muhlbauer and Riccardo Mazzola, founding member of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) and its first president (1989-1990). He donated a large sum of money to EURAPS in 2005, which allowed the annual attribution of the Hans Anderl Award for outstanding achievements in the field of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.

Hans will be remembered as an icon in Plastic Surgery, a great friend and colleague.
