Dear friends,

EURAPS 2007 finished with great success. Congratulations to Stan Monstrey and his colleagues from Ghent!!

Now it’s time to think about EURAPS 2008.

As host of EURAPS 2008, I am very pleased to welcome you to the Island of Madeira, the so-called “Pearl of the Atlantic – the Floating Garden”. And so close to continental Europe!

From 29 – 31 May 2008, you will be able to enjoy another important scientific event which characterizes EURAPS and where, I am sure, innovations will again be presented.

But it is also worthwhile to visit this wonderful and unique Island. I invite you, therefore, to spare some of your time to enjoy the extraordinary natural beauty and mild climate of Madeira and, at same time, to learn about traditions and customs, visible in its old buildings and in regional products like wine and unique hand-made embroidery, well known around the world.
One of the greatest attractions of the Island of Madeira lies in its spectacular landscape. Its luxurious vegetation continues to fascinate all those closely drawn to nature.

Madeira also offers a wide variety of leisure activities; for the ecotourism lovers, the best way to enjoy the splendour of its untamed landscape is to follow the footpaths along the “levadas” - water courses, a kind of irrigation channels - running round the mountains and built by the first settlers to carry water to inaccessible farmland. For golf lovers, there are two courses to choose from, Palheiro Golf with its 18 holes and Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra with 27, both set in outstandingly beautiful scenery. And sea lovers may find a large range of water sports such as, diving, boat trips and game fishing. But for those who prefer to enjoy the sun and to relax, they will find basalt-pebble beaches all around the island and bathing complexes that will enable them to enjoy the fantastic natural resources of this archipelago surrounded by a warm, crystalline sea.

And, after a great day out, there's nothing like the Madeira nightlife for fun and relaxation. A glass of the famous Madeira wine savoured at sundown is the best way to end the day and to get ready for the evening.

Don’t forget to regularly visit the EURAPS website. We promise to have some surprises for you as well as plenty of information to help you organize your trip.

Come and discover Madeira and see you next May in Funchal!
